Airports
The closest airport is the Portland International Airport which is about 50 minutes drive. From Boston's Logan International Airport the drive is approximately two and three-quarter hours.
Driving
When driving north from the New Hampshire/Maine border and approaching the Portland area on I-95 (the Maine Turnpike), take exit-44 onto I-295 and drive through Portland. Driving time from here to Cundy's Harbor is about 45 minutes. Continue north on I-295 past Freeport and LLBean. (Driving time from here is about 25 minutes.) Take exit-28 marked Coastal Route 1. Follow signs to Bath which takes you around downtown Brunswick. At a certain point Route 1 goes left as Maine Street goes straight into the center of Brunswick. Stay on Route 1.
Continue about three miles to the Cook's Corner and Brunwick Naval Air Station (NAS) exit. At the traffic light you go straight onto Route 24 south. (This crossroad is Bath Road; to the right/west is Shaw's Supermarket, to the left/east is WalMart and fast food restaurants.)
On Route 24 drive 4.2 miles south. Go left at the Cundy's Harbor Road sign. Follow Cundy's Harbor Road for 4.3 miles. You will pass the Block and Tackle Restaurant on the left. Take your immediate left onto Holbrook Street. Holbrook is a narrow, winding road that is quintessential Maine where lobstermen live and work. Stay on the "main" street when there is a choice. After an obviously steeper section, just past Sloop Lane at the Pound View Road sign, go left onto Prosser Road. This turns into Sailors Way which is less than 200 yards further.
Osprey's Nest and Hopkins View are in the two-story building on your left; Sailors Rest is the second building on left. There is parking for one car in front of each unit. If you have a visitor they must park in front of or beside the canvas garage in the parking area opposite the row of mailboxes. The neighbor’s house also has a canvas garage; please do not mistake that for the proper parking area.
Grocery store
If you want to pick up groceries as you arrive, the Shaws Supermarket at Cook’s Corner will be your best and most convenient choice. As you come off Coastal Route 1 at Cook’s Corner, instead of going straight onto Rte. 24 south, make a right turn at the traffic light (Rte. 24 north). Shaws will be on your right in about ¼ mile. Supermarkets in Maine sell liquor.
Cundy’s Harbor --- Watson’s General Store and more
This is Maine local color at its best. Continuing on Cundy’s Harbor Road will take you to Watston's (on left down driveway) where fresh lobsters are stored in the ocean at their dock; be sure to tag along to make your selections. It is just a little bit of a place but they have the best lobster around. A little further along, past the one-room library on the left, is the active fishing harbor (Cundy's Harbor) including a good casual seasonal fish and lobster restaurant on the Hollbrook Wharf, Hawkes (seasonal) Gift Shop, and a general store. |
